Password Reset

Because up to 60% of support calls can relate to resets of user passwords, Targetfour has developed this utility to automate the handling of this type of call.

Many installations run multiple computer systems. Each of these systems will have a Userid and Password authentication system to ensure that unknown users are blocked and that known users are only given access as appropriate. However this can result in personnel who use multiple systems having multiple Userids with different passwords, making password management a problem. In addition, in a secure environment, there is typically a need to change these passwords on a regular basis and audit these changes, which can involve a significant amount of effort.

The Password Reset group of products work together to address these concerns by managing the multiple Userids and signons from a central database. The password is updated in this database and automatically propagated to the other systems that the user needs to log on to. Password changes therefore become much simpler and easier to manage.

The Password Reset functionality can also be extremely useful in facilitating a central point of contact for resetting and/or re-enabling Userids when these Userids become Ďlocked outí for any reason (such as password expiry). Similar commands and controls can be used for any supported system, removing the need for Help Desk or equivalent staff to understand security details on all the controlled systems.

Password Reset will work with Active Directory, NTLM, zOS and AS400 authentication.

The Password Reset Server acts as a server for the central password management client by responding and implementing requests for password change, resetting Userids and supplying Userid status information to the client.

Using Password Reset

The simplest quick call mechanism can reduce a password reset request to entering the callerís Login ID in HEAT and then selecting the appropriate autotask from the autotask menu, such as in the example below.

HEAT Auto Task Menu

This will update the call details, save the call and then invoke the Password Reset program, passing in details of the user. If preferred, you can configure your HEAT system to run Password Reset from a visible Password Reset screen within HEAT, as in the following example.

Password Reset Screen

If the caller provides the helpdesk operator with the correct security information, the password reset processing will continue and, if successful, will indicate this to the operator, close the call and journal the details of the request.

If the caller cannot provide the correct answers for the security check question, does not have answers in the database, or if the reset request fails for any reason, e.g. the callerís account details are not present in the database, the full Password Reset application screen will be presented.

Here the operator has options to add or edit account details, or request a password reset bypassing the security questions (if they have the authority to do so). When bypassing, another dialog will pop up, asking for the reasons for the bypass. This information is stored in the journal records associated with the call.
